Dog Grooming Basics: A Simple At-Home Routine
Distribuie
You don't need a professional groomer on speed dial to keep your dog looking and feeling their best. A short, consistent routine at home goes a long way.
Brushing
How often you brush depends on coat type: short-haired dogs usually do fine with a weekly brush, while long-haired or double-coated breeds benefit from brushing every 2 to 3 days to prevent mats and reduce shedding around the house.
Bathing
Most dogs only need a bath every 4 to 6 weeks unless they've gotten into something messy. Over-bathing can dry out their skin, so it's usually a case of less-is-more.
Nails
If you can hear your dog's nails clicking on the floor, they're due for a trim. Go slowly and trim small amounts at a time to avoid the quick (the sensitive part of the nail) — if you're ever unsure, a vet or groomer can show you the ropes.
Ears
A quick weekly check for redness, odor, or excess wax can catch problems early. If anything looks off, it's worth a vet visit rather than guessing.
A little consistency each week is worth more than one big grooming session a month.
